HST already contains the 5% federal share, which is why those provinces show no separate GST. Nova Scotia moved from 15% to 14% on 1 April 2025.
Frequently asked
Not since 1 January 2013. The 9.975% QST applies to the pre-tax amount, not to the GST-inclusive one. A calculator that compounds it overcharges by roughly 0.5%.
HST is 14%, cut from 15% on 1 April 2025.
HST is a single harmonised tax that already contains the 5% federal share — Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Elsewhere the federal GST and the provincial tax are charged separately.
Choose "Remove tax" and enter the total. The pre-tax amount is the total divided by one plus the combined rate — not the total minus the percentage, which is the common mistake on receipts.
