Minutes to decimal: the conversion table
Payroll counts in hundredths of an hour, not in minutes. 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, not 0.30 — that gap explains most of the timesheets that come back rejected.
| Minutes | In decimal | Minutes | In decimal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 min | 0.00 | 30 min | 0.50 |
| 5 min | 0.08 | 35 min | 0.58 |
| 10 min | 0.17 | 40 min | 0.67 |
| 15 min | 0.25 | 45 min | 0.75 |
| 20 min | 0.33 | 50 min | 0.83 |
| 25 min | 0.42 | 55 min | 0.92 |
For a value not in the table, divide the minutes by 60: 37 minutes is 37 ÷ 60 = 0.62 hours.
Frequently asked
Convert each duration to minutes, add them, then convert back: 7h45 and 8h30 are 465 + 510 = 975 minutes, which is 16h15. The classic mistake is adding 7.45 and 8.30 as decimals, which gives 15.75 — wrong, because 45 minutes is not 0.45 of an hour.
0.75 hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5, 45 minutes is 0.75. The conversion table below lists the common values.
Yes. If the end time falls before the start time — 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., say — the shift is treated as crossing midnight and counted as eight hours.
Only the ones you enter. The break column is in minutes and comes off that day’s total. Rules on paid and unpaid breaks vary by province and by the agreement that applies to you.
No. Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing is sent, stored or tracked.
If you are doing this every week
This is precisely the job Puuunch does for you: hours go in as the week happens, the total is already there on Friday, and the export goes straight to payroll.
